TATHRA

Surf, Sea, Sun And Loads Of Fun

Tathra is 23kms north from Merimbula.  Drive along the Sapphire Coast Road, turn right at the end and this will take you to the spectacular town of Tathra with magnificent views and clean beaches. Tathra Beach itself is 3kms long and is patrolled during the busy summer months by lifeguards from the Tathra Beach Surf Lifesaving Club. You will find an excellent playground for the kids as well as a skate park right on the beachfront.   There are also toilet facilities and a modern BBQ area situated right next to the park and skate park.
Tathra has its own launching ramp at Kianinny Bay which gives access to the Pacific Ocean.  There is also beach fishing, rock fishing or try your luck at prawning at the River Mouth. Another great spot to drop a line quickly is at the restored Tathra Wharf.  Not only can you catch some big fish and enjoy the peaceful outlook but the Wharf has a Maritime Museum, refreshments, crafts and souvenirs.

Tathra was earlier inhabited by Europeans in 1820s and 1830s. Regular shipping activities started between 1861 and 1862 when a large wharf was built from the donations made by farmers. The Tathra Wharf has been recognised by the National Trust as playing a part in Tathra's history as it is the only remaining steamer wharf on Australia's vast coastline and is classified by the Trust as such.

At Mogareet Inlet, where the Bega River joins the sea, you'll find another boat launching ramp which has access to the river.  Locals and tourists enjoy this area for river fishing, water skiing, windsurfing and canoeing. It has shallow water with sandy beaches and BBQ's, picnic area, playground and modern toilets.  This is a great spot for a family day out.
Tathra also has its own 9 hole golf course at the Tathra Country Club and the Tathra Bowling club welcomes all bowlers to its three bowling greens and tennis courts. Tathra has a variety of art and craft galleries and a variety of places to eat.

You can also enjoy the natural environment by venturing into the local National Parks such as Bournda National Park or Mimosa Rocks National Park. The Mimosa Rocks National Park lies to the northern side of Mogareka Inlet. This is a beautiful coastal park with an abundance of beautiful beaches such as: Middle and Aragunnu Beaches, the beautiful Moon Bay, Bithry Inlet, Lake Wapengo and Nelson Lagoon. For the avid bush-walker, there are many tracksto be found here with breath-taking views of the surrounding landscape. One of the most popular tacks is the Kangarutha Walking Track which has spectacular views of the coastline.  The track is 9kms and takes in a diverse mixture of terrains and scenery.  If you plan on doing the entire walk make sure you are properly equipped and have contacted the National Park for information on weather conditions.  The walk is not for beginners.  For more information on this walk click here
